CRO specialist job description (template)
Job title: Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) Specialist, E-commerce
About the role: You’ll own the conversion rate of our online store. Your job is to find out why visitors don’t buy, turn those insights into A/B tests, and grow revenue per visitor month after month, using data, not opinions.
Responsibilities
- Analyse the full funnel (homepage, collections, product pages, cart, checkout, post-purchase) and find the biggest leaks.
- Research customer doubts from analytics, session recordings, reviews, surveys and support messages.
- Write test hypotheses and rank them by expected revenue impact.
- Design and run A/B tests with our testing tool; brief design, copy and development, or build tests with AI tools.
- Read results correctly (sample size, test length, revenue per visitor) and roll out winners.
- Report monthly on tests run, wins, losses and learnings.
- Work with paid media to match landing pages to ads, and with the e-commerce team on pricing, AOV and checkout.
Requirements
- 2+ years running A/B tests on e-commerce sites, with examples of tests you designed and their results.
- Strong analytics: GA4, Shopify Analytics or similar; comfortable with spreadsheets.
- Understanding of test statistics: significance, sample size, why not to stop early.
- Good UX and copy judgement, and a habit of starting from customer research.
- Experience with Shopify (and ideally Shopify Plus checkout) is a plus.
- Familiarity with AI tools for research, design and building test variants is a plus.
KPIs for the role
- Revenue per visitor (primary).
- Conversion rate and average order value.
- Number of tests shipped per month and win rate.
- Checkout drop rate and add-to-cart rate.
Salary range (US, 2026): about $75,000–$105,000 base for mid-level; $105,000–$145,000 for senior. (Salary sources and comparisons.)
CRO manager job description: what changes
A CRO manager owns the programme rather than individual tests. Add these to the template:
- Own the testing roadmap and the quarterly revenue target from CRO.
- Manage designers, developers, analysts or an agency.
- Set the testing standards: minimum sample sizes, test length, decision metric.
- Report to leadership on revenue impact.
US salary estimates for CRO managers sit around $104,000–$107,000 on average in 2026.
Interview questions that reveal real testers
- “Tell me about a test that lost. What did you learn?” Real testers have plenty. (I paused one that cut orders from 13 to 5: here’s why.)
- “Conversion went down but revenue went up. Winner or loser?” The right answer mentions revenue per visitor. (The price test example.)
- “Our store gets 300 orders a month. How would you test?” Look for sample-size awareness: bigger changes, longer tests, fewer at a time.
- “Where would you look first on our store?” Good candidates ask for funnel numbers before suggesting designs. (The funnel benchmarks.)
- “Our add-to-cart rate fell but purchases rose. What happened?” Strong candidates recognise better-qualified clicks. (Example.)
- “How do you decide what to test first?” The answer should be revenue impact and customer doubts, not personal taste.
- “How would you run two tests on the same page?” One per page at a time, unless traffic is very high.
Before you post the job
The most common reason in-house CRO fails isn’t the specialist: it’s that tests wait weeks for design and development. Before hiring, make sure the role can actually ship tests: through your developers, AI tools, or an agency.

Frequently asked questions
What does a CRO specialist do?
Analyses where visitors drop off, researches why using analytics, sessions and reviews, turns that into test hypotheses, runs A/B tests, reads the results correctly and rolls out the winners.
What skills should a CRO specialist have?
Analytics (GA4, Shopify Analytics), A/B testing statistics, UX and copy judgement, customer research, and the ability to prioritise tests by revenue. Familiarity with Shopify, Meta ads and AI tools is a strong plus.
What's the difference between a CRO specialist and a CRO manager?
A specialist runs tests. A manager owns the programme: roadmap, priorities, team and reporting to leadership, usually with a higher salary (around $104,000–$107,000 on average in the US).
