If you’re thinking of hiring someone to improve your store’s conversion rate, the first question is usually: what does a CRO specialist cost? Below are the 2026 salary ranges from the main US salary trackers, what a complete CRO setup really costs, and how that compares with an agency or AI CRO.

Salary data changes often and varies by city, company size and title. The figures below are ranges reported by public salary trackers in 2026; check current postings in your market before you set a budget.

A note on searching: “CRO” also stands for Chief Revenue Officer and Chief Risk Officer, so many salary pages for “CRO salary” are about executives, not optimisation specialists. Search the full title instead.

The hidden cost: one specialist isn’t a CRO programme

A CRO specialist plans and analyses tests. But every test also needs design, copy and code, and someone has to read the data properly. Doing CRO the traditional way takes a team:

  1. a strategist who decides what to test;
  2. a data analyst who reads the numbers;
  3. a designer;
  4. a developer;
  5. a copywriter.

In the US, that team costs around $500,000 a year in salaries, about $40,000 a month, and it still runs only a few tests a month. Add recruiting time, benefits, tools and management.

If you hire one specialist without the rest, tests wait in the developer’s queue. That’s the most common reason in-house CRO stalls.

CRO specialist vs agency vs AI CRO

OptionTypical costTests per monthBest for
One in-house CRO specialist~$75,000–$145,000 a year + design/dev timeDepends on dev capacityBrands with an existing design and dev team
Full in-house CRO team~$500,000 a yearA fewVery large brands

What it’s worth: the payback math

On a store doing $50,000 a month, a few winning tests that get 10% more visitors to buy add about $5,000 a month. On $200,000 a month, the same 10% is $240,000 a year. (The full math.)

So the question isn’t only “what does a specialist cost?” but “how many winning tests will we actually ship?”. A $90,000 specialist who ships two tests a month can easily be worth it at scale. A specialist stuck waiting for development usually isn’t.

When to hire, when to outsource

  • Hire a specialist if you already have design and development capacity, enough traffic for weekly tests, and someone senior to manage them. Use the CRO specialist job description to brief the role.
  • Use an agency or AI CRO if you want results before you can build a team, or if your developers are already busy. (How I run it.)
  • Need senior ownership but not a full-time executive? A fractional head of ecommerce is the middle ground.
